Strategy 5.0 Data Dashboard

Each solution of the CAIP is measured by a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound) goal. PSPM is responsible for providing guidance and best practices to the staff responsible for implementing the goals, and for tracking progress. Data is collected each fall for for the previous fiscal year (FY) and a report is prepared in early spring. The baseline for the goals is FY2019.

5.1.1: Department and Unit Zero Waste Plan Heading link

SMART Goal

  • Launch campuswide Zero Waste Task Force with eight of 15 major unit Green Teams by end of CY 2020.
  • Work with the Zero Waste Task Force to get five UIC units with established Green Teams to create their zero-waste plan by the end of FY2023.

Status: On Track

Twelve units are participating in the Zero Waste Task Force, and several are working to create zero-waste plans by FY 2023.

5.2.1: Operational Waste Collection Efficiency Heading link

SMART Goal

  • Reduce total waste generated per weighted campus user by 35% from 2006 baseline levels by end FY2024.
  • Increase the campus recycling rate by 2% annually.
  • Pilot the sonar sensors installation project on in-place compactors to avoid pickups when the container is less than 75% filled by the end of FY2023.

Status: On Track

UIC’s recycling rate has steadily improved most years. Based on the increasing trend between 2000 and 2021, we forecast (light blue bars) the recycling rate will exceed the goal of 2% annual improvement over the 2019 baseline.

5.2.2: Construction and Demolition Waste Heading link

SMART Goal

  • Salvage and recycle at minimum 90% of nonhazardous construction and demolition (C&D) waste by weight, including five different waste stream materials per the UIC Construction Waste Management Building Standard 01 74 19.
  • Receive all dump reports, recycling records, or other records from PSPM project managers for projects which haul materials off-site in order to report the weights of all material diverted, landfilled, and incinerated.

Status: On Track

Even after increasing the target diversion from 75% to 90% in 2022, we are on track to continue achieving this goal.

5.3.1: Food Scrap Collection Heading link

SMART Goal

  • Expand compost collection to four additional buildings in FY2023.
  • Increase the campus composting rate by 2% annually.

Status: Data Unavailable

5.3.2: Food Recovery and Security Heading link

SMART Goal

  • Continue food collection twice per week in UIH kitchen, and once per week in SCE kitchen, adding one pickup per semester until the Food Recovery Network achieves five pick-ups per week.

Status: Data Unavailable

5.4.1: Purchasing Process Heading link

SMART Goal

  • Expand the UIC Sustainable Purchasing guide to include the following; also communicate with the Academic Fiscal Officer and Business Manager Group once annually and confirm usage by 10 UIC units by end FY2024:
    • chemically-intensive products and services
    • consumable office products
    • furniture and furnishings
    • Information technology (IT) and equipment
    • food service providers
    • garments and linens
    • professional service providers
    • transportation and fuels

Status: Data Unavailable

5.4.2: Revenue-Generating Contracts Heading link

SMART Goal

  • Achieve 25% of total annual food and beverage expenditures on products that are sustainably or ethically produced and 50% of expenditures on plant-based foods by end of FY2024.
  • Increase the percentage of sustainability-sourced and plant-based food expenditure by 10% (total) for the subsequent food service contract cycle.

Status: Data Unavailable

5.4.3: Purchasing Policies Heading link

SMART Goal

  • Develop sustainable procurement language with Purchasing and implement in pilot procurement
  • Increase the percent expenditure of office paper with 100% post-consumer recycled paper content (or FSC Recycled/100% label) by 5% annually.
  • Install 12 additional refill stations by the end of FY2024.

Status: On Track

This goal is considered on track because a sustainable purchasing policy was adopted in FY 2022. However, data is not yet available to assess UIC’s progress toward 100% post-consumer recycled paper purchases or installation of refill stations.
