Previous Plans and Reports

In January 2018, UIC released the Climate Action Implementation Plan (CAIP) which operationalizes the earlier Climate Action Plan and Climate Commitments by breaking them into seven strategies and 41 solutions. Here is a progress report developed in 2021.

The UIC Climate Action Implementation Plan (CAIP) integrates the Aspirational Goals and Short-Term Action Items of the UIC Climate Commitments into seven major strategies containing 33 refined, data-driven solutions.

UIC Greenhouse Gas Emission Data

This graph illustrates UIC’s overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions beginning in 2004, the year the university began tracking its emissions. GHG emissions are categorized into three major categories referred to as Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3. (The categories of scopes are detailed in the Business-As-Usual section of the CAIP.)

To get to carbon neutrality by 2050, UIC needs to greatly reduce GHG emissions each year. By 2030, we need to emit no more than 178,000 MTCO2e to be at the 40% reduction target from 2004 levels, which is our mid-term goal. However, given our current trends, we are forecasting to emit 228,000 MTCO2e by 2030.

A detailed, interactive and accessible graph of UIC’s GHG emission data is posted publicly on Second Nature’s website and updated annually.
