Project Oasis

Burnham Hall Third Floor Oasis

The Project Oasis program was created to provide students with places to interact, study, and gather between classes and during extended breaks. Since 2003, the program has transformed more than 50 underutilized areas on campus into comfortable and supportive learning environments. These informal learning spaces were designed and renovated with an emphasis on improving lighting, acoustics, and ergonomics. In addition to providing new, contemporary furniture and finishes, many oases are adorned with artwork created by UIC Art and Design students and alumni.

Giving to Project Oasis

Project Oasis is made possible only through charitable gifts and donations from university alumni, friends and staff. Every gift helps these vital learning environments continue to be created and maintained.

Taft Hall Oases
Currently under renovation, Taft Hall will include updated formal and informal learning spaces. Your donation will support these oases:

  • First floor southeast: This welcoming oasis, located at the southeast entry to the building, has integrated charging at café-style seating. At the windows, swivel chairs with attached writing surfaces are a quiet place for individual work or contemplation.
  • First floor northeast: This oasis is in a quiet area at the northeast corner of the first floor and houses a multi-seat table with charging for collaboration or group study and lounge chairs at the windows. Decorative felt wall panels lend visual interest to the space.
  • First floor northwest: The largest oasis, located at the northwest building entry, has varied seating including an L-shaped couch, café height tables and stools, ottomans with laptop tables, and booth-like tables and chairs. Artwork funded by the Art-in-Architecture program will be installed on the wall.
  • Second floor: The only oasis on the second floor is at the bridge connection to adjoining Burnham Hall. Seating options are varied and include a large oblong couch, swivel chairs with attached tablet arms for individual work, and table seating with charging.

Student Center East Outdoor Oasis
Student Center East is the building with the most student activity on campus. Per the university’s 2018 Master Plan Update, there is an opportunity to create a new zone along the west side of the building where students can relax outdoors.

Naming opportunities for these oases are also available. Please email pspm@uic.edu for more information.
